On Writing le Blog

"Let every man take care how he talks, or how he writes of other men, and not set down at random, higgle-de-piggledy, whatever comes into his noddle." ~ Cervantes

This quote from Good Advice on Writing by two guys with curiously similar names, Safire and Safir, makes me reconsider my premise for this blog. Lately, my content has been updates on our being part of the "Nat'l Disaster Area," and sometimes rubbish like Dr. McDreamy the Flasher - but I don't know, I just found it waaay too amusing when I asked my daughter where McDreamy's (actually he's Dempsey's Enchanted character) pants were, and she said they were lost. So, with only a trench coat, what was I to do but create a McFlasher scene? She, of course had no idea why Mommy got all excited, laughing hysterically, and started setting up her dolls and photographing them; she was just thrilled I was playing with them....So, the quote, it made me ask myself if I put any thought into my posts here. And my answer is, 75% of the time, yes. Just looking back over the year, I can name several "meaningful" posts. They may not be meaningful to you, but they are to me. Take, for instance, this one from December, or this one, or maybe Walmart Mommy from November. Or, my early masterpieces like Just Gimme My Goddamn Chicken Caesar, and my ode to Stuart Smalley from March.

Why so pensive, you ask? Today, my travel piece came out in a really nice local mag, and I have another couple at an online travel site linking me to my blog. Totally excited about building my portfoilio but again, the paranoia. It has returned. That damned paranoia that I will be linked to my blog locally, this ranting blog where I post photos of Barbie dolls partying and cuss, sometimes, like a sailor. But ya know what? Oh well. It's my space, my catharsis, my totally uninhibited creative outlet. MINE!

For anyone who feels like me, like they need to censor themselves for someone else's sake, take these quotes:

"Better to write for yourself and have no public than to write for the public and have no self." ~ Cyril Connolly

"Writing is one of the few professions left where you take all the responsibility for what you do. It's really dangerous and ultimately destroys you as a writer if you start thinking about responses to your work or what your audience needs."

Heed those words, and write on, Bloggers!

Peace~

Love these quotes, and you know I am a fan of quotes in general. I don't see how being yourself cannot make you a better writer. Congrats on getting published!

i just stumbled upon your blog, serendipitously i might add, and i want to say keep blogging freely! don't let fear stop you or those terrible thoughts of...what if so and so reads it and links it to me. we all need a place to just spout off. i live a life of dual blogs as well. one where i am known, where i write for a certain audience (i am a writer as well). and the other is just for me. i say what i want. i rant, cuss, spit and whine. i don't check for grammar or spelling. i don't even revise. just out with it. i need that so badly! so keep on...

Thanks for the perspective. I am in a similar boat. Although I haven't gotten any writing work yet, I am seeking it. I actually have had to edit the past a bit just in case. I try write only from a viewpoint of honesty and forget about the whole wide world. It's hard sometimes.

Wow! That was quite the story telling! Im quite amazed at all the things you've done! No wonder your soo happy! Well I hope you had your fun and excitement. In the mean while, as winters kicking in right now, we might be expecting some change! A change in weather hopefully to the better :} I dunno, some how reading about what you wrote makes me remember things that I never thought I would have ever remembered, funny how that works doesn't it?? But you know what?? I'll be honest, these quotes you got runnin' here are something out of the ordinary! I really enjoy them :)
